FAQ's
about Travel Clinic

Opting for a travel consultation conducted by your Pharmacist grants you a personalized risk assessment tailored to your specific travel plans. Your Pharmacist will educate you about health risks and precautions, and might suggest preventative travel medications and vaccines.

The Government of Canada advises consulting a healthcare provider when traveling outside the country. For Canadians venturing abroad, a travel consultation is recommended to ensure a healthy journey. This pertains to travel destinations like Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, and other Caribbean locales, as well as more distant spots such as Thailand, China, India, or Peru.

In numerous countries, vaccine-preventable diseases persist despite being eliminated in Canada. Vaccinations play a pivotal role in maintaining health during the trip and after returning home.

Immunizations can help avert travel-related infections, encompassing:

  • Routine childhood or adult immunizations similar to those in Canada, such as for diseases like diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, pneumococcal, and meningococcal, which might have lapsed.

  • Vaccines necessary for specific international borders, such as yellow fever.

  • Recommended immunizations based on the risk of infection in the travel destination.

Vaccination offers protection against a range of preventable infectious diseases that tourists may encounter. These include cholera, European tick-borne encephalitis, hepatitis A and B, influenza, Japanese encephalitis, meningitis, rabies, typhoid, and yellow fever. It’s essential to consider these vaccinations when planning travel to ensure a safe and healthy journey

Vaccine availability is contingent upon supply.

For yellow fever vaccinations, designated centers are responsible. Visit the Government of Canada’s website to locate these centers for yellow fever.

A travel consultation, executed by your Pharmacist, tailors a personalized risk assessment to your itinerary. This service resembles what’s offered at Travel Clinics. You’ll receive insights about health risks, precautions, and recommendations for tailored preventative travel medications and vaccines. Furthermore, your pharmacist can recommend various travel-related items like first aid supplies, over-the-counter medications, travel-sized essentials, and more within the store.

It’s advisable to arrange travel consultations at least six weeks before departure to allow for the effectiveness of some vaccines and medications. If your travel is within six weeks, your Pharmacist can still provide vaccine and medication recommendations, as well as educate you about health risks.

Upon booking, you’ll receive an online travel consult form, which should be completed before your appointment.

On the appointment day, bring if available: a comprehensive list of all medications including non-prescription ones, vitamins, and supplements; a record of medications you’ve taken over the past decade; and your extended health care benefits card.

The consultation service ranges from $30 to $50 per person, with potential additional fees. The consultation fee doesn’t cover prescription, medications, or vaccine administration.

No, provincial health plans don’t cover travel consultations.

Certain private extended health care plans may offset some medication and vaccination costs. Contact your health plan provider or employer for more information.
