Enhanced
We provide medication management, medication reviews and medication reminders. Though patients of all ages are seen in the retail pharmacy setting, older adults make up a large portion of that population. Patients older than 65 years of age are often taking multiple maintenance medications, and they rely on their pharmacist for guidance and advice when they begin taking a new medication, have to switch medications, or are diagnosed with a new disease. Geriatric patients (age ≥65 years) who have low health literacy, limited income, and vision or hearing difficulties require even more attention and help from their pharmacist.
By working with patients individually and reviewing their complete medication lists — including OTC medications and supplements our pharmacist is able to identify a variety of safety concerns. Oftentimes, elderly patients are experiencing unnecessary side effects from medications that can be avoided by switching to more geriatric-appropriate medications. Prescribing cascades occur when medications are prescribed to treat side effects of other medications. This often leads to the use of multiple unnecessary medications. Identifying and replacing offending agents can eliminate the need for several medications, and reduce pill burden.
Routine
MedsCheck is a program that allows you to schedule a 20 to 30 minute one-to-one meeting with our pharmacists to ensure that you are safely and appropriately using all types of medication. Think of it as a comprehensive medication review. And it´s free! Just bring your OHIP card. The MedsCheck appointment is your chance to discuss how your prescription, over-the-counter and alternative medications may be affecting each other.
During this one-on-one meeting, you will have an opportunity to learn about your medications and medical condition(s). As part of this service you will benefit by:
- Gaining a better understanding of drug names, strengths, adverse effects, and usage instructions. This may include over-the-counter and/or herbal medications.
- Understanding the benefit of taking your medications as your doctor has directed.
- Investigating strategies to manage any adverse effects or issues surrounding the medications you take.
- Discussing other resources available to educate you and support your continued good health.

Take away
Naloxone (pronounced na-LOX-own) is a fast-acting drug used to temporarily reverse the effects of opioid overdoses.
Naloxone can restore breathing within 2 to 5 minutes. When you take an opioid, it affects certain receptors in your brain. Naloxone works by kicking opioids off the receptors in your brain and binding to those receptors instead. This reverses or blocks the effects of opioids on your body.
Naloxone only works if you have opioids in your system, such as:
- fentanyl
- heroin
- morphine
- codeine
Naloxone is safe for all ages. It only works if you have opioids in your system. You cannot use naloxone improperly and does not create dependence. It is safe to keep a naloxone kit on hand.
At Lifecare Rx Pharmacy we carry, two types of take-home kits:
- Naloxone nasal spray – Naloxone nasal spray is sprayed directly into the nose, where it is absorbed. It starts to take effect in 2 to 3 minutes.
- Naloxone injectable – Naloxone injectable is injected into any muscle in the body, such as the arm or thigh. It starts to take effect in 3 to 5 minutes.
